12pm-1pm – In the Spirit of Science: The Science of Spirits – As we know, nineteenth-century science challenged the metaphysical position of humanity handed down by Judeo-Christian tradition. Beginning in mid-century, however, and extending through World War I, spiritualism resonated throughout the western world. Mediums—many eventually exposed as illusionists—conducted private seances and public performances. Earnest researchers, including some at major universities and Scientific American, sought proof that the spirit world actually existed. Intellectual figures like evolutionary theorist Alfred Russell Wallace, pioneer psychologist William James, and Arthur Conan Doyle argued in favor of belief.
In this session we will begin with the history of spiritualism in all its forms with particular emphasis on its relationship with contemporary science, and look at its influence on fiction. Attendees are encouraged to share their own favorites of the past and present. How does steampunk present the spirit world?
